WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari in Republican National Committee v. Mi Familia Vota, indicating that they will review the case in their upcoming term. The RNC is asking the Court to ignore the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) to silence the voices of Arizona voters.

Since 2018, plaintiffs, including the AZ AANHPI for Equity, have successfully enforced the NVRA’s protections in Arizona. A federal judge previously overturned anti-voter laws in the state that blatantly violated the NVRA, and the Ninth Circuit affirmed. With the U.S. Supreme Court set to review the case, these longstanding protections may now be at risk.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC (Advancing Justice – AAJC) and AZ AANHPI for Equity issue the following statement in response:

“Every eligible American deserves the same opportunity to register, vote, and have their voice heard. The National Voter Registration Act was enacted to remove unnecessary barriers to voter registration, not create new ones. Burdensome proof of citizenship requirements and unlawful mass voter purges close to federal elections disproportionally impact naturalized citizens, Asian Americans who have the highest rates of naturalization, and other historically marginalized voters. In Arizona, Asian American, Latino and Native American voters have been singled out by these anti-voter attacks for too long. Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC and AZ AANHPI for Equity will continue fighting to ensure that the voting rights of all Americans are upheld and that every eligible voter can fully participate in our democracy without added barriers, regardless of their background or race.”
