Washington, D.C. -- Asian Americans Advancing Justice (Advancing Justice), an affiliation of five civil rights organizations, responds to the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States with the following statement:

“The Senate’s approval of now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh is an affront to the impartial judicial system that protects the civil and human rights of individuals as well as our belief that everyone has a right to live free from violence. It does an injustice to survivors of sexual assault, who take great risks in coming forward with their stories of abuse. Further, the appointment disregards the gravity of a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court - Kavanaugh’s views are inconsistent with the views of the communities that we serve, and we stand firm in support of those communities.

Over 23 percent of Asian and Pacific Islander women living in the United States have experienced some form of sexual violence, a population that will be even further marginalized by a Supreme Court with now two members who have been publicly and credibly accused of sexual misconduct.

Additionally, this current court will be deciding cases involving women’s rights, affirmative action, the death penalty, LGBTQ rights, immigrant rights, and a host of others that will have a significant impact on the communities we serve. A justice such as Kavanaugh will only make it harder for our communities to protect their rights.

Advancing Justice will continue organizing and advocating for meaningful access to justice for all vulnerable and underserved communities.”
