WASHINGTON, D.C. Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC (Advancing Justice – AAJC) issues the following statement in response to President Trump’s executive order restricting vote by mail:

“In America, voters decide elections while the states and Congress administer how elections are run. The President doesn’t have a role, except as an individual voter—one who used mail voting just a few days ago. President Trump’s recent executive order is a direct attack on our freedom to vote by imposing unnecessary barriers. The executive order is a blatant attempt to instigate fear by instructing the creation of official-sounding citizenship lists based on flawed, inaccurate data for purposes of flawed enforcement, persecution and harassment. Once again, this Administration is determined to threaten the safety and wellbeing of innocent Americans. The goal of this executive order is to continue to add barriers for people to cast their ballots.

“The reality is that mail voting is secure and reliable. Across the country, millions of voters, including Asian American communities, rely on vote-by-mail to participate in our elections. For many, including voters with limited English proficiency, elders, voters with disabilities, and those in rural or underserved areas, mail voting is the only way they are able to participate in our elections. All 50 states and the District of Columbia have some form of mail voting, and tens of millions of people rely on it to participate in our democracy.

“This executive order is yet another blatant power grab. It is part of the same playbook to silence the voice of voters. Whether voting by mail, in person, or through other lawful methods, every eligible person deserves the freedom to cast a ballot and have it counted. Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC will work tirelessly to reassure our communities and protect the freedom to vote for all.
