Media Diversity
By design, media across its various formats is meant to serve broad swaths of people. Different communities have distinct media needs, and negative stereotypes, misconceptions, and misinformation often arise when music, movies, television, and other forms of media do not accurately portray or fail to represent all members of society. Advancing Justice | AAJC supports all aspects of media diversity, whether this be the production of movies with Asian American casts or the creation of local outlets catering to Asian American media preferences.
Asian Americans in Media: Asian Americans have historically been depicted in the media in stereotypical, one-dimensional, and often dehumanizing ways. To combat misperceptions about our multifaceted community, we advocate for fair and equal representation of Asian Americans both in front of and behind the camera. We also call out harmful portrayals and stereotypes, which have the potential to bleed into negative consequences off screen.

Media designed for Asian Americans: In addition to advocating for Asian American representation across movies, television, and pop culture, we also work to ensure that Asian Americans have access to in-language and tailored media centering stories that matter most to these communities. We work to better understand gaps in Asian Americans’ current media and information consumption landscapes and push for media designed by and for Asian Americans.
