Misinformation

Misinformation uniquely impacts historically marginalized communities. For Asian Americans, these problematic narratives can range from inaccurate COVID-19 health information shared on platforms like WeChat to misleading voter guidance deliberately spread by bad actors on and offline. Our research indicates that factors such as language barriers, limited media literacy resources, and media platforms' inadequate investment in non-English content moderation leave our communities particularly vulnerable to these harms. We address these threats through rapid response narrative monitoring, corporate accountability advocacy, and community-centered solutions.

Media Consumption: Advancing Justice | AAJC conducts focus groups and surveys to better understand how Asian Americans consume media, understand the news, and interact with misinformation. Our 2025 report, Beyond Language Translation, finds that factors such as immigrant generation, political views, preferred language, and ethnic identity influence susceptibility to misinformation and disinformation. We call for increased investment in trusted, in-language messengers who can counter false narratives targeting Asian Americans and other vulnerable communities. Read our report here:

Narrative Monitoring and Inoculation: Our misinformation team actively tracks emergent online narratives spreading within and about Asian American communities across various social media platforms. This includes monitoring potentially problematic stories related to voting rights, education, immigration, and racial profiling—among other issues—across platforms and Asian languages. As threats emerge, we coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to address these problematic narratives through fact-checking, inoculation, and narrative change resources.

Corporate Accountability: AAJC advocates for more robust and transparent content moderation policies and substantive in-language fact-checking. Our misinformation team flags stories that fall through the cracks for media companies. We monitor biases and disparities that may arise from automated content moderation technologies and crowd-sourced anti-misinformation efforts, such as Community Notes.
