Government programs like the Small Business Administration’s 8(a) program, and those provided by the Minority Business Development Agency (“MBDA”), are essential for remedying past discrimination against racial and ethnic minorities, including Asian Americans, helping the American economy thrive, and reinforcing our democracy. These programs ensure that minority-owned small businesses are able to survive and thrive, benefitting not only the businesses themselves but the communities they serve and the nation as a whole.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Monday, December 9, Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC (Advancing Justice – AAJC), along with 52 undersigned civil rights organizations, submitted a letter to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries urging them to decline the reauthorization of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (Select Committee) in the upcoming 119th Congress.

The House approved legislation last week that would reinstate the Department of Justice’s controversial China Initiative over the objections of critics who argue it was biased against Asian American academics. The bill passed on a vote of 237-180, with support from 214 Republicans and 23 Democrats.

September 11, 2024 — Stop AAPI Hate, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, and Asian American Scholar Forum (AASF), issued the following statement in response to today’s series of votes on U.S.-China legislation in the House of Representatives.
On July 8, 2024, Speaker Johnson gave a speech at the Hudson Institute, previewing that his goal is for Congress to send the White House a significant package of China-related legislation by the end of the year; since then, congressional leaders and the media alike anticipated this series of votes to take place in September during this so-called “China week.” While we do not object to allotting time on the congressional calendar to bundle pressing national security concerns posed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), we caution against framing such a time as ‘China week.”
