据美国侨报网编译称，托马斯ⷩ(Thomas Nguyen）的成长经历很可能反映了许多在美国南部长大的亚裔群体的生活。20世纪80年代，得州本德堡县（Fort Bend County）还基本都是白人社区，许多当地的孩子甚至都没见过亚裔面孔。阮回忆，他的父母是1975年赴美国的。阮说，(薛家岛在线 www.xuejiadao.net)，那个时候，他经常因为人们对亚裔的刻板印象而遭到嘲笑。但如今，快速增长的人口亚裔，正改变美国南部地区。
《赫芬顿邮报》（Huffington Post）报道称，类似的故事在亚裔群体中并不少见。但现在，亚裔已成为美国增长最快的族群。加州大学河滨分校的政策研究项目“亚裔美国人与太平洋岛民”（AAPI）数据显示，美国南部地区的亚裔人口增长速度最快。
根据亚美公义促进中心（Asian Americans Advancing Justice）对美国人口普查局（U.S。 Census Bureau）的数据进行分析得出，2000年至2010年间，美国南部地区亚裔数量增加了69%。

Washington, D.C.— As the 116th Congress begins to tackle its agenda this term, voting rights is a key issue. Among the items included in the newly introduced H.R. 1 bill, “For the People Act,” is better access to early voting, easier access to online voter registration, and the recognition of the need to restore the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
