WASHINGTON, D.C. – Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC commends the Biden Administration’s decision to redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti for 18 months. TPS would allow over 100,000 Haitian nationals, including children, to live and work in the United States.

On April 28, President and Executive Director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, John C. Yang, testified before the United States House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary's subcommittee on immigration and citizenship. The U.S. has not updated the family-based immigration system nor increased the annual number allocation of immigrant visas in over 30 years (since 1990) despite that fact that the U.S. population has increased and is aging.

Washington, D.C.—After tireless advocacy of immigrant communities in Maryland led by our partners at CASA, the Maryland state legislature passed the Dignity Not Detention Act (SB 478/HB 16) and Maryland Driver Privacy Act (SB 234/HB 23) with veto-proof majorities. The Dignity Not Detention Act will prevent profit-driven expansion of detention in Maryland.

The House passed the American Dream and Promise Act, HR6, which would provide a path to citizenship for DACA recipients, undocumented youth, the children of certain nonimmigrant visa holders, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) holders. The House also passed the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, HR 1603, a bill that would offer undocumented farmworkers a path to citizenship.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—March 15, 2021— Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas announced that the U.S. government would designate Burma ( Myanmar) for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC commends the administration’s decision which would allow around 1,600 Burmese nationals resettled across the country to remain in the United States temporarily and work.

U.S. Citizenship Act Makes Strides for Pathway to Citizenship, Family Immigration

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Linda Sanchez introduced the U.S. Citizenship Act, President Biden’s immigration proposal that would offer 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. a path to citizenship with a faster path for DACA recipients and Temporary Protected Status holders. Senator Menendez plans to introduce the same legislation on Monday in the Senate.
We filed an amicus brief in Farhane v. United States. In Farhane, the Second Circuit will determine whether a criminal defense attorney’s failure to advise a naturalized U.S. citizen of the denaturalization and deportation consequences of a guilty plea constitutes ineffective assistance of counsel under the Sixth Amendment.
