Washington, DC – January 31, 2017 – The White House fired Acting Attorney General Sally Yates yesterday, calling her actions a betrayal after she directed Justice Department attorneys not to defend the administration’s flawed executive order to ban refugees and immigrants from predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States.
In response to the White House statement and actions, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, an affiliation of five civil rights organizations, issued the following statement:

WASHINGTON – Asian Americans Advancing Justice (Advancing Justice), an affiliation of five civil rights organizations, responds to the selection of Neil Gorsuch as nominee for Supreme Court Justice of the United States with the following statement:
As organizations representing Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, we are extremely troubled by Senator Sessions’ record of disenfranchising and denying the rights of people of color, immigrants, and Muslim communities. Senator Sessions, if confirmed, would be the chief law enforcement officer of the United States, charged with protecting the rights of all people in the United States as well as overseeing the immigration court system. His record makes him unfit for this role.

Washington, DC – Today, President Trump issued an executive order banning immigrants and refugees from predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States. “We condemn today’s executive orders condoning fear and ignorance in the name of national security,” said Elica Vafaie, National Security and Civil Rights Attorney at Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Asian Law Caucus. “It’s a direct affront to communities still reeling from the spike in anti-Muslim violence and hate incidents since the election season.”

Asian Americans Advancing Justice Condemns Executive Orders on Immigration

WASHINGTON – The new administration announced today the signing of several inhumane and draconian executive orders intended to endanger immigrants and create fear in immigrant communities. The executive orders include a promise to withhold federal funding to sanctuary cities, greatly increase the number of immigration enforcement officers and border patrol officers, resurrect the controversial Secure Communities program, create new deportation priorities, and to increase detention—including children and families—at the border.
