Letter Rejecting House Reconciliation Bill (H.R. 1)

June 4, 2025

This bill will trample our constitutional rights and fuel this administration’s use of immigration enforcement to subvert due process and terrorize communities.

Opposing this bill should not be a partisan matter. While adding trillions to our national debt, this bill will strip health care coverage for millions of families. It will plunge our communities into deeper food insecurity and deepen the poverty chasm for nearly 4.5 million children of immigrants, all to pay for tax cuts for billionaires and corporations and unprecedented, unaccountable funds for mass deportation. Members of Congress should support legislation that keeps our communities safe and healthy, not increase hardship for everyday people just trying to survive.

This bill will trample our constitutional rights and fuel this administration’s use of immigration enforcement to subvert due process and terrorize communities. By allocating over $150 billion (with few to no strings attached) to jail families, abduct and disappear new neighbors and long-standing members of our communities, and enrich private prison corporations, this bill threatens our identity as a nation and the rule of law. We would not be able to reverse the inevitable harms to children, people in need of humanitarian protection, and families facing forced and indefinite separations. These outcomes would also pervert the purpose of the budget reconciliation process and advance a policy agenda that endangers us all.
