WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, President Trump signed an executive order (EO) seeking to block states from implementing artificial intelligence (AI) regulations, despite public calls for AI policies that address the documented discriminatory harms of the technology.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC (Advancing Justice – AAJC) issues the following statement in response:
“This attempt to block AI regulations at the state level absent meaningful federal safeguards is a clear attack on consumer protections and civil rights. There are documented harms of unchecked AI tools across consequential contexts: predatory tactics such as algorithmic pricing risks widening the wealth gap; facial recognition technology has misidentified people of color at higher rates than white individuals, which can lead to wrongful stops, detention, and arrests; AI-powered translation tools have produced inaccurate language translations in immigration proceedings, increasing the risk of unfair case denials and deportations.
“This executive order prioritizes the interests of AI companies while leaving many vulnerable to preventable harms. States have led the way in advancing responsible AI use in key sectors, including housing, lending, employment, healthcare, and more. Threats to withhold federal funding and unleash lawsuits upon states exercising their right to protect their residents undermine important progress without a federal standard in place. Technological innovation plays a critical role in moving our country’s progress forward, but it should never come at the expense of fundamental protections. We urge policymakers to advance AI solutions that center civil rights and help pave the way for a more equitable future.”
