WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congress reintroduced the Artificial Intelligence Civil Rights Act to help safeguard our rights while allowing for AI innovation.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC (Advancing Justice – AAJC) issued the following statement on the reintroduction of the AI Civil Rights Act:
“We all deserve technology that works for us, regardless of our race, background or income. Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC welcomes this critical step towards holding technology companies accountable and putting civil rights at the center of AI innovation. Right now, opaque algorithms rely on faulty data to create AI systems that can perpetuate bias and discrimination against communities of color and low-income communities. Biased and unchecked algorithms risk locking people out of jobs, housing, education, health care, and justice, continuing a history of discrimination that has harmed Asian Americans and other communities.
We must urgently update our civil rights protections to address the unintended harms of modern technology. The AI Civil Rights Act does exactly that. Accountability in technology prevents AI tools from reproducing and deepening the discrimination of the past. We need guardrails that will ensure responsible innovation, real transparency, and independent audits to protect all communities from harm. The AI Civil Rights Act is a clear path forward to help us build a fair and equitable future for all. We urge Congress to take swift action to pass the AI Civil Rights Act.”
