WASHINGTON, D.C. – Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC condemns recent racist and dangerous comments made on the right-wing political podcast Timcast IRL suggesting that Chinese Americans should be incarcerated in the event of a hypothetical war between the United States and China. During the discussion, a panelist raised the prospect of incarcerating “all the Chinese Americans we can find” and questioned the allegiances of Chinese Americans with family ties to China, invoking longstanding racist tropes questioning the loyalty and belonging of Chinese Americans.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC (Advancing Justice – AAJC) issues the following statement in response:
“Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC is deeply disturbed by recent comments on a podcast floating the idea of incarcerating Chinese Americans in the event of a war with China. This kind of dangerous rhetoric draws on the 'perpetual foreigner' myth that casts Asian Americans as outsiders whose loyalty can never fully be trusted. We've been down this road before, and it was a disgrace: the WWII-era incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese American citizens is now widely recognized as one of the darkest chapters in U.S. history and as a grave violation of constitutional rights. Suggesting that we revisit it is not ordinary political commentary, but rather a call to normalize injustice that we swore never to repeat.”
