WASHINGTON D.C. - Kaiser Permanente, the nation’s largest integrated, nonprofit health care organization, has committed $5.4 million to combat the surge in violence against people of Asian descent and to support the rights, health, and wellness of the Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities. Racial prejudice toward these groups predates the COVID-19 pandemic but has recently increased as pejorative connections between COVID-19 and people of Asian heritage have fueled xenophobic, anti-Asian sentiment and hate crimes.

Anti-Asian Hate

The Asian American community has long struggled for visibility and equity, and now faces additional physical and mental health harms due to the increase in anti-Asian hate. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Asian American community saw a sharp increase in anti-Asian hate crimes and hate incidents due to the misattribution of the coronavirus to our community. However, anti-Asian hate is not a new phenomenon: from the time our communities first immigrated to the U.S.
