Washington, DC — Asian Americans Advancing Justice condemns the unconscionable violent removal of a United Airlines passenger and demands a thorough investigation and policy changes.
On August 2, 2017, President Trump formally endorsed the RAISE Act, which was reintroduced by Senator Tom Cotton (R-AK) and Senator David Perdue (R-GA). The RAISE Act would decimate the family-based immigration system and reduce the number of green cards available in any given year by 70%. The new version of the bill replaces the current employment-based system with a points-based system.

Asian American advocacy organizations have lambasted the two memorandums by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), issued on February 21, which implement the immigration policies under President Donald Trump in line with his campaign promises on tightening border control. The move would increase the categories of people subject to priority deportation, as well as speed up the removal process of the nation’s 11 million undocumented.

“I think it's becoming increasingly important for the community to not remain silent and to actually speak out about immigration issues,” says Jenny Zhao an attorney with the civil rights group Asian Americans Advancing Justice-ALC. “And I think that goes both for the need for immigration reform and a pathway to citizenship and also for the issue of immigration enforcement and deportation.”
Asian Americans Advancing Justice said then, “It is deeply troubling that the Senate confirmed Jeff Sessions despite his extreme anti-immigrant record and reports that he played a role in President Trump’s executive order to ban Muslims and Syrian refugees . . . .”
