Asian American Tech Table letter on automated decision practices and commercial surveillance

Automated decision-making pratices can be highly invasive and discriminatory towards
communities of color, including Asian Americans. Online companies’ mass collection of
personal data is used to target consumers with advertisements, content, and recommendations
based on their perceived interests and demographics. This process may introduce bias into the
decision making process, when it shows different individuals different options for housing,
employment, and credit opportunities or reproduces historical pattenrs of bias, it result in illegal
discrimination.
